PAT RIOT PRESENTS Film Screening and Artist Talk

TICKETS HERE

Hyde Park Art Club [HPAC] are delighted to announce PAT RIOT Presents  - a film screening and In conversation event  featuring works  by KP Culver and invited guest artists.  Join us for an informal evening to hear the artist in conversation and to see some amazing film works that connect to the themes of our current exhibition PAT RIOT.

KP Culver is an interdisciplinary artist, attending to how collective and personal narratives are shaped, distorted, and reimagined over time. This approach is deeply informed by an interest in how we come to know and sense the world through embodied practices. Through touch, voice,

or shared acts of noticing - works seek out, and create intimate encounters that challenge

extractive or binary logics.

Pat Riot is a new exhibition by KP Culver Open Daily / 9.30am - late / 11.09.2026 - 08.11.2026  at Hyde Park Book Club.  This exhibition  explores performance and belonging through

photography, moving image and material transformation. Playing on the word patriot, the

exhibition asks what it means to gather not through nations or borders, but through creativity and shared acts of imagination. At the centre of the exhibition is an enlarged photograph of

Culver’s nan, Pat, taken by the artist as a child. Covered in face paint, Pat appears both familiar and uncanny, transformed on a monumental scale to welcome us into the space.

Accompanying works in the space draw on wider histories of performance, whilst remembering Pat’s garden as an early site of play, imagination and becoming. Chroma green surfaces become a threshold where the body can shift and transform. The green recalls both the artificial space of image production and the pictorial “green” of landscapes and pastoral myths.

BOOK LAUNCH: Volatile by Tom Branfoot with J. R. Carpenter and David Dobson

Tickets HERE

Local poet Tom Branfoot launches his debut collection Volatile, with readings from J. R. Carpenter and David Dobson.

Tom Branfoot's debut poetry collection explores nature during a time of political crisis, drawing its title from the Middle English use of 'volatile' to name birds and other winged creatures. Pulling apart what it means to dwell, habitat loss appears synonymous with eviction, and birds become fellow travellers in our precarious present.

Featuring the Forward Prize for Best Single Poem shortlisted "A Parliament of Jets", these complex, formally daring poems are concerned with the entanglements between personhood, global catastrophes, and ecosystems. These poems swoop between the unpredictable relationship between a son and their alcoholic parent, fighter jets soaring over the Lake District, and the mercurial rustle between memory and truth when childhood is stored in waterlogged pastures.

Ticket cost will be redeemable against a purchase of Volatile.

Leeds Cineforum- Porto Marghera: The Suspended Years (Porto Marghera: Gli anni sospesi) – a documentary by Manuela Pellarin

FREE ENTRY

We’ll be screening "The Suspended Years: Movements and Paths in Porto Marghera" (2009), directed by Manuela Pellarin.

Porto Marghera – the industrial area on the Venice Lagoon – is the place where, in the 1960s and ’70s, the Italian New Left current known as operaismo (or workerism) met with the extreme toxicity of large-scale chemical industry, and developed an original approach to tackle it.

This perspective was based on the thesis of the inherent noxiousness of capitalist work and it shaped a cycle of radical interventions in workers’ struggles to survive the productivist inferno in which they had been tossed. Today, this little- known side of operaismo can inform a much-needed working-class environmentalist politics.

The documentary "The Suspended Years" by Manuela Pellarin depicts a vivid portrait of this collective journey through an assemblage of interviews with the protagonists of those mobilisations.

The screening will be introduced by Dr Lorenzo Feltrin.

"Instrument" (1999) + Leeds Cineforum 10th Anniversary Party

"Instrument" (1999) is a fittingly unconventional portrait of the legendary DC punk band Fugazi, tracing the band’s evolution from its origins through its electrifying prime.
Directed by filmmaker Jem Cohen and filmed over more than a decade (1987–1998), the documentary captures the ferocious energy of the band’s live performances alongside intimate moments backstage and in the studio. In doing so, it offers a rare glimpse into an often-enigmatic group whose unwavering commitment to independence, anti-corporate ethics, and activism continues to inspire the DIY underground.

The film will be introduced by Fugazi-fan Dr Alice Borchi.

In the same DIY spirit, after the screening of "Instrument", we'll celebrate the 10th anniversary of Leeds Cineforum. We've got plenty of surprises in store, so don't miss it!

A story of a personal battle against unchecked power and the injustice and exploitation it permits. Never has there been a more relevant and frightening analogy for the modern times than this collection.
