We’ll be screening "The Suspended Years: Movements and Paths in Porto Marghera" (2009), directed by Manuela Pellarin.
Porto Marghera – the industrial area on the Venice Lagoon – is the place where, in the 1960s and ’70s, the Italian New Left current known as operaismo (or workerism) met with the extreme toxicity of large-scale chemical industry, and developed an original approach to tackle it.
This perspective was based on the thesis of the inherent noxiousness of capitalist work and it shaped a cycle of radical interventions in workers’ struggles to survive the productivist inferno in which they had been tossed. Today, this little- known side of operaismo can inform a much-needed working-class environmentalist politics.
The documentary "The Suspended Years" by Manuela Pellarin depicts a vivid portrait of this collective journey through an assemblage of interviews with the protagonists of those mobilisations.
The screening will be introduced by Dr Lorenzo Feltrin.
