This lively, collaboratively made documentary charts the story of an international group of people who joined together to draw attention to the suffering of those starving under the Israeli government’s blockade of Gaza. It follows the Madleen aid ship and the supporting boats of the Flotilla Coalition in their preparations and journeys across the seas to Gaza.

Madleen Kulab, a 32 year old woman, mother of 5 children, grew up in a fishing family in Gaza. She was reputed to be Gaza’s only fisherwoman in a male dominated industry. She went on to organise a fisherwomans guild. Then came the invasion of Gaza. Her family lost everything and were displaced multiple times.

On being asked for her blessing to have the flotilla named after her she urged them not to endanger themselves and said “In our isolation, that ship was a sign of solidarity. It told us that free people around the world still stand with us”.

The film screening will be followed by a discussion with Hannah Schaffer, a crew member from the Madleen Flotillas.

This event is supported by Film Hub North with National Lottery funding on behalf of the BFI Film Audience Network.
