Liz Flanagan is best known for her acclaimed books for children and young adults, and When We Were Divided marks an exciting new chapter in her writing career as she turns her attention to adult novels for the first time. A creative writing teacher, former book editor and former Centre Director for Arvon at Ted Hughes's Lumb Bank, Liz lives in Hebden Bridge and is deeply connected to the landscapes and communities of West Yorkshire.
Set in Yorkshire, 1643 , against the backdrop of the English Civil War, When We Were Divided, follows the lives of three captivating characters. Jane, a devoted mother, unravels when her last son goes to fight for the King. Her sister Isabel, trapped in an unhappy marriage, finds purpose supporting Parliament's cause. Kit, starving and alone, survives by taking his dead brother's identity, discovering danger, friendship and love within the King's army. As the conflict spreads across the land, these three lives as war fractures families, loyalties and identities with devastating and transformative consequences.
