Her Ensemble, directed by Ellie Consta, will present their show ‘Forgotten in History’. Merging aspects from classical and pop scenes, the free-form group will perform music written by women spanning the past 2000 years.

Her Ensemble’s programme is a response to the discovery that in 2019, just 3.6% of the classical music pieces performed worldwide were written by women. It's just not true that “there haven’t been that many women composers” - the ensemble will present an eclectic mix of music spanning from Hildegard von Bingen (c1098-1179, abbess, writer, composer, and philosopher) to the brand new folk-inspired Clan from Joanna Borrett.

The Beauty of Being Herd

Back again by popular demand after a sell out show in January.

Do you ever feel like an outsider? Hannah is keen to fit in. In fact, she's tried very hard. She's decided now to say goodbye to life as she knows it, and to live instead as a sheep.
A funny, playful, and tender show with original songs, clowning and possibly a rave. This is a show for anyone who has ever struggled with social things.

You might recognise performer and writer Ruth Berkoff, she has lived in Leeds for most of her life. She's a Gaulier graduate, a former panto dame and an ex-Samaritan. Quite a mix.

Bryony Kimmings says of her work: Ruth is magnetic and talented.

“Warm hearted and empathic. Hugely entertaining” - British Theatre Guide

Audience feedback:

"It reduced me to tears and made me laugh and smile so much my cheeks hurt."

"Brilliant! Go see it! Emotional rollercoaster."

"A really powerful experience around the search for human connection"

MELTS

Tickets: HERE

Dublin’s MELTS announce the release of their second album ‘Field Theory’ (pre-order here) and share lead single and album-opener ‘Figment’. Recorded live to tape in Black Mountain Studios in summer 2023 and produced by Gilla Band’s Daniel Fox, the album is set for release April 12th via cult indie label Fuzz Club (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, The Jesus And Mary Chain). MELTS are also today announcing UK/EU April tour-dates in support, including a show at London’s Moth Club on April 30.

While their debut album, 2022's ‘Maelstrom’, dealt with forces on a larger scale affecting a whole city, ‘Field Theory’ explores connections on a smaller, interpersonal scale. The title takes the scientific term ‘Field Theory’, which describes how forces interact and influence particles around them, and applies it to the interactions between people, to the space between all of us, how people interact and affect others around them. Expanding on the album’s themes, MELTS explained:

“Like gravity we are drawn to and miss people and like light waves we love people and are loved. We live in orbits of each other, drawn by unseen forces. The album explores these forces, how we relate to each other, the people we live with and the people we live without. At the heart of Field Theory lies the realisation that we inhabit each other's worlds as much as our own, through a field of wide-ranging forces, as important as the ones keeping the planets in place.”

On ‘Figment’ – which kicks things off in a blaze of bulldozing motorik electronics, blown-out MBV-esque guitars, primal percussion and Eoin Kenny’s commanding vocals – they say: “Figment is about the relationship we have with the world around us, filtered through our own imagination, shaped and coloured by how the individual see’s the world. The difference between the concrete and imagined. The video for Figment was shot by Irish filmmaker Andy Parkes and explores similar themes as the song - how the mind perceives the world subjectively based on key elements: time, emotion and distance from the person or event.”

Comprising of Robbie Brady, Hugh O'Reilly, Gaz Earle, and Eoin Kenny, MELTS spent 2022/2023 touring their celebrated debut ‘Maelstrom’ across Europe, the UK, the US and Ireland, including festival appearances at Wide Awake and SXSW. Outside of their own headline dates, they have also toured with Fontaines D.C. and supported Gilla Band and Public Image Ltd. Along the way they have been praised by the likes of NME, Dork, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan and Paste, alongside gaining widespread airplay on BBC 6 Music.

Produced by Gilla Band’s Daniel Fox, MELTS’ ‘Figment’ is out now via Fuzz Club and available on all digital platforms.

Chiedu Oraka

Tickets: HERE

On May 1st, come celebrate the release of Chiedu Oraka’s new mixtape 'Misfit' due for release on Friday 26th of April 2024 via Launchpad+ / EMI North.

A leading figure in the Northern Rap and Grime scene, Chiedu Oraka, aka ‘The Black Yorkshireman’ defies genres with his blend of raw honesty and social poetry.

Comprised of 12 tracks, ‘Misfit’ is a celebration of differences, a homage to those who are unapologetically authentic and unafraid to be unique in a society that pushes conformity. Chiedu is one such person. Raised in a predominantly white, North Hull council estate, Chiedu has never conformed, both in society and with his music. Feeling like an outsider for most of his life, Chiedu raises a call to arms with 12 tracks that share not only his own experiences but offers others who relate a chance to feel heard.

Oraka is one of the founding members of music collective Lockdown, alongside MC/producer, Deezkid and DJ, Joe The Third. Through their independent label ROOM 73 the collective have released a number of hit songs, including ‘Men Behaving Badly’, ‘Flex’ and ‘Darcy’, with most having attracted attention from Sian Anderson and Annie Mac through to Charlie Sloth and Sir Spyro with Oraka’s highest performing single, ‘Darcy’ achieving 3 million+ streams and sitting on Spotify's Grime Shutdown for over 300 days (8th longest on playlist).

COUSIN KULA - VITAMIN D 2024 UK TOUR

COUSIN KULA - VITAMIN D 2024 UK TOUR

Tickets HERE

Living together, nestled in the sun-drenched hills on the outskirts of Bristol, Cousin Kula have created their own otherworldly musical universe of serene pop, with vastly distinct, but complementary elements: “the possibilities of jazz, the emphatic energy of club culture, and the sonic tapestries of psychedelia” CLASH remark.

On new album ‘Vitamin D’ (Spring 2024, Rhythm Section Intl.), the Cousin Kula sound is unmistakable, instantly recognisable - just somehow renewed. If their debut album ‘Double Dinners’ was the soundtrack to your heartbreak, then this is the sound of falling back in love again. This feeling is encapsulated in the warm horns, care-free groove and potent potential of the band’s exclamation, “Summers coming!”

With this sophomore effort, Cousin Kula have expanded their vocabulary but also learnt when to just sit back in the groove. A quintet of virtuosic musicians - Cousin Kula appear to have nothing left to prove - flexing when necessary, but more often than not, stripping it right back and revelling in the pocket. Funk & disco has permeated their psychedelic indie-soul sound and it’s all the better for it.

In 2020 the release of a lo-fi, mostly live, cassette grabbed the attention of beloved tastemaker and DJ Bradley Zero. The band put together their first full length Double Dinners, released on Rhythm Section Intl. in 2021. “The band balance an outsider approach with more hooks than you can shake a stick at” the label boss & DJ explains “the result being a gently beguiling sound that effortlessly draws you in, revealing more character with each listen.” The album received similar praise from CRACK, The Guardian, Gilles Peterson to name a few, and saw Cousin Kula tour with Mildlife around the UK.

Masters of their craft, but also of restraint, this prodigal band is known to fans for their live show. Having performed in various bands since they were in their early teens, not being able to hit the stage during lockdown took its toll on these musicians. Ever resourceful, however, Cousin Kula began a series of their own home-made live sessions, which lead in turn to a Boiler Room Session and further a request from XL signees BADBADNOTGOOD to record a live adaptation of their new single.

Now, Cousin Kula flutter into the collective consciousness with a timeless slice of psychedelic disco on their new material. The latest band to emerge out of the buoyant Bristol music scene, they have stripped back all excess baggage for their most accomplished recordings to date. This album is for the lovers, but also for the dancers. It’s a rare case of perfect thematic and musical synergy.  It will pick you up and leave you with a good feeling.

Intuitive drawing & jewellery making workshop. Theme: TOUCH.

Tickets HERE

In this workshop, you will design and make (not complete) a piece of silver or brass jewellery through intuitive process and working with the idea of touch.

We will use a series of prompts to explore connection, perception, intimacy, and our inner/outer worlds through the action of bodily touch. Explore alone, with a friend/partner, or with a stranger.

We will also work with drawing techniques: recording the lines we trace on bodies with fingertips, exploring how our hands can move together and draw together, and explore symbols of connection and intimacy.

These drawings will act as a base for you jewellery design.

You will then select a drawing or part of your drawing that you would like to make in metal. I will guide you through the process of turning this shape into a piece of jewellery: whether this is a pair of earrings, a ring or necklace.

You will shape and hammer your choice of recycled sterling silver or recycled brass wire into this design, using jewellery making tools. This is a simple process and suitable for beginners. Please note, due to the constraints of the venue, we cannot use blowtorches or any soldering equipment on site. As such, your piece will be finished and polished by me after the workshop and posted out around one week after the event.

All materials are included. The shipping cost covers the postage of your final piece of jewellery after the workshop. Please select your intended items to make from the ticket options.

Future Sounds presents Cosmonaut at Hyde Park Book Club on 12th May 2024.

Cosmorat is the brainchild of Taylor Pollock and Olly Liu. Taylor grew up in a small town inPennsylvania. She started her music career gigging at bars and playing in various garagesand basements around her hometown. As most kids from rural farm areas, Taylor’sexperiences growing up were peppered with exploring decaying buildings, haunting emptymalls, hanging out at gas stations, and getting into trouble out of boredom. Dealing with themundanity and trauma that comes with late stage capitalism, Taylor explores what it meansto be evil, and if people considertheir opinions and actions or if it is more grey.

Taylor met Olly in college where they shared a love of Alabama Shakes and blues music. They began writing together and have been in and out of several bands before focusing onmaking their own project. They studied recording engineering to explore their love of texturesand sounds. They not only try to conjure up emotional responses with densely packed lyrics, but they also try to make soundscapes with guitars and vocals to create sonic scenery. Aftertheir move to to London, Taylor and Olly added Lorenzo Burgio to the line up, forbreakbeats, samples, and bombastic drums.

Alex Lowe (Hurricane#1)- Acoustic

British indie rock band Alex Lowe (Hurricane#1) is coming to Hyde Park Book Club to play an intimate acoustic set in the Snug with guitarist Ricky Papa.

Hurricane#1 was originally led by Andy Bell, alongside lead vocalist/guitarist Alex Lowe, bassist Will Pepper, and drummer Gareth Farmer.

The band reformed in 2015 led by Alex Lowe, joined by Brazilian brothers Carlo and Lucas Mariani on guitar and bass, and Chris Campbell on drums. Jon Roberts (guitar) and Stuart Fletcher (bass) joined Lowe and Campbell for the band's 2019 album.

It’s been a long time since Alex hit the Road due to 3 times a week of dialysis sessions for the last 2 years, but now with a successful kidney transplant under his belt, Alex is ready to hit the road and do what he was meant to do. DJ Lubi presents: Amon Ra Collective + Billy Goulding Sextet

Tickets: HERE

As a taster for his forthcoming Leeds Jazz Festival shows, DJ Lubi brings two of Leeds' most exciting young jazz ensembles into Hyde Park Book Club for a night of cosmic jazz mayhem and assorted musical cacophony. Amon Ra Collective and the Billy Goulding Sextet feature some of the finest next generation players emerging right now in the city's vibrant DIY jazz scene.

Leeds-based avant garde jazz band Amon Ra Collective are a large community of over 20 members, appearing at live shows around the city for the past 2 years in different combinations of between 2-15 people. Led by trumpeter Samuel Ehret-Pickett, they play an exciting fusion of energetic solos, pulsating rhythms, electronic noise, free improvisation and Butch Morris' Conduction method. Inspired by the music of Miles Davis’ electric jazz fusion, John Coltrane’s free jazz and the spiritual world music of Don Cherry, they bring together jazz, rock, world music, afrobeat, drum & bass and cosmic funk into one big Amon Ra musical melting pot.

They released their debut album "At The Centre Of Everything" in autumn 2023 through Lamplight Social Records (the label run by Roller Trio saxophonist James Mainwaring), and now their music is available beyond the Leeds city limits. Musicians from Amon Ra Collective are part of the vibrant Leeds jazz scene belonging to groups such as Fergus Quill’s Imaginary Big Band, Ancient Infinity Orchestra (Gondwana Records), Nika Ticciati’s Cataclysm Ensemble, Afrodesia, Nova.Sol and Rushbonds. Tonight, the bigger ensemble (as seen at their album launch in autumn 2023), will be performing at Hyde Park Book Club.

“Amon Ra channel Sun Ra into now and beyond with their cosmic blend of free-jazz and heavy grooves” - Fusebox

Drummer Billy Goulding will be opening the show with his Billy Goulding Sextet. They play fiery spiritual jazz inspired by modern and past greats such as John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and Kamasi Washington. Billy himself is a much in demand drummer around the Leeds Conservatoire jazz scene, playing drums with Nova.Sol and Afrodesia as well as percussion with Amon Ra Collective. The sextet features some of the hottest jazz talents coming through conservatoire right now. Full line up is Billy (drums), Andrew Brown (piano),  Conrad Clenton (soprano and tenor saxophones), Charlie Folland (alto sax), Alex Milling (guitar) and Austin Bowers (bass). Música Universal - A Tribute To Brazilian Music Legend HERMETO PASCOAL

Música Universal - A Tribute To Brazilian Music Legend HERMETO PASCOAL

Tickets: HERE

For Leeds Jazz Festival 2024, Hyde Park Book Club has joined forces with Leeds jazz legend DJ Lubi (Lubi Jovanovic) to present a special commission (by Lubi) for one night only bringing together two of the city's favourite and best known jazz musicians paying homage to a living legend of Brazilian music..

Música Universal - A Tribute To Brazilian Music Legend HERMETO PASCOAL by Fergus Quill/Gustavo Andrade & The Universal Music Ensemble

Bass player/bandleader/composer/arranger Fergus Quill and Brazilian tenor saxophonist/bandleader Gustavo Andrade have one big thing in common. They love the music of Brazilian music legend Herneto Pascoal. Both discovered the musician as young jazz fans. Fergus heard Hermeto for the first time on the Miles Davis "Live Evil" record which then led him to the musician's own body of work. Gustavo was aware of Hermeto from when he first got into jazz but his love for the man's music really took off in 2019 after he attended a workshop in Brazil with Hermeto's bass player Itiberê Zwarg. Tonight, they have assembled a fantastic group to perform some of their favourite Hermeto Pascoal compositions.

Hermeto Pascoal is a giant of Brazilian music. Born in the northeast of Brazil, he started playing piano accordion as a child, taught by his father, and quickly became proficient on a variety of instruments.. His music career started in 1964 with appearances on several Brazilian recordings alongside relatively unknown groups. These albums and the musicians involved (Edu Lobo, Elis Regina, Cesar Camargo Mariano) were instrumental in creating new directions in post-bossa nova Brazilian jazz.

In 1966 he began a long collaboration with another Brazilian music legend, percussionist/drummer Airto Moreira. First in the Sambrassa Trio, then in Trio Novo who became Quarteto Novo in 1967 (Hermeto on flute). When that band broke up he joined the rock band Brazilian Octopus before releasing his debut self-titled album under his own name in 1970. In 1971, his international profile was boosted by a guest appearance on Miles Davis' "Live Evil" album, who he met with Airto on their first trip to the USA a few years earlier..

The 1970s saw some of his most famous releases including "Slaves Mass" (1977), "Trindade" (1977), "Zabumbê-bum-á" and "Ao vivo Montreux Jazz Festival" (both released in 1979). During the same decade, he also collaborated with many fellow legends of Brazilian music on their recordings - Sergio Mendes, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Edu Lobo, Elis Regina, Sivuca - and guested with many top US jazz musicians like Donald Byrd, Duke Pearson and Stone Alliance.

Known as "o Bruxo" (the Sorcerer), Pascoal is a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist playing keyboards, button/piano accordions, melodica, saxophones, guitars, flutes, brass instruments and various Brazilian folkloric instruments and percussion to the highest standard. He is renowned for using unconventional items as instruments, including household kitchen utensils (pots, pans, teapots, cutlery, cups), children's toys, furniture. As he once told The Guardian newspaper journalist John Fordham "The quantity of instruments is infinite because of me – wherever I am is an instrument. A chair is an instrument. A table is an instrument. There are so many instruments".

His musical tastes are equally as diverse, playing and loving all music around him - jazz, classical music, rock, popular Brazilian music, folkloric music, electronic music. In the same interview with Fordham he explained his view of music. "It comes from the universe, so that's why I call it "musica universal", it's an energy that never stops. It hovers over us wherever we are". And that's why Fergus and Gustavo have called this celebration of Hermeto's music "Música Universal" and named their band The Universal Music Ensemble.

The line up is :

Fergus Quill - bass, percussion, assorted objects

Gustavo Andrade - saxes, percussion, assorted objects

Ruben Maric (Plantfood) - keyboards, piano accordion, assorted objects

John Settle (Sueli Gil Band) - drums, percussion

Joe Redgrave (Tempo Feliz) - Latin/Brazilian percussion

Raquel Alvaro - vocals, assorted objects

This is a special project created by Fergus, Gustavo and DJ Lubi for Leeds Jazz Festival 2024. Whether you are a fan of Hermeto Pascoal and his music or just love concerts and music that are challenging and full of surprises, you need to be at this show. Just 150 capacity, get your tickets asap as this one will sell out.

Hyde Park Jazz Club will follow the concert upstairs in the bar at 9pm with a guest band and the usual jam session (free entry).

The Hanging Star

The Hanging Star

Tickets: HERE

On A Golden Shore arrives as The Hanging Stars reflect on a year of triumphs. With an Americana Music Association Bob Harris - sanctioned award and a Nashville sell-out in Third Man’s Blue Room with Jack White approvingly looking on, they’re a leading light in the UK Cosmic Americana cohort. Their standing has allowed them to pay less attention to any preconceptions of what they are ‘supposed to be’. On A Golden Shore - their fifth album and their second for the pioneering Loose Music, following 2022’s Hollow Heart - finds them definitively themselves and presents a set of disparate songs whose fundamental linkage is the band that made them.

On A Golden Shore was recorded at Edwyn Collins’ Clashnarrow Studios with Sean Read producing. Singer/guitarist Richard Olson, drummer Paulie Cobra, multi-instrumentalist Patrick Ralla, plus freshman bassist Paul Milne – laid down the album’s backbone over eight days. Mostly recorded live, even the solos done as a piece. Much is first take because trying better, it never worked as well. Pedal-steel player Joe Harvey-Whyte created and added his parts at his London studio bringing ‘shimmery psychedelic goodness’.

Smartly sequenced On A Golden Shore proceeds in clusters of songs; commencing with the free and easy choogle of ‘Let Me Dream Of You’, encompassing the sunny glam of ‘Sweet Light’, the baggy Balearic waft of ‘Happiness Is A Bird’, the pan pipes and bongos of the exotic ‘Golden Shore’, through to the rolling banjo of ‘No Way Spell’ and the celestial cascades of ‘Heart In A Box’. Fashioned instinctively On A Golden Shore is ultimately an album of sensation as much as thought, filled with fleeting moments of blissful excess, and stumbling, rushing flutters of sound; its evanescent psychedelia, divine choruses, and shards of strings combine into an infectious, compelling Cosmic Heartbreak Boogie.

Jonny & The Baptists: The Happiness Index / Ten Thankless Years

A double bill of two shows in one night, from cult multi-award winning musical-comedians Jonny & The Baptists. A brand new hour of songs and stories about why we are (or are not) happy; and a retrospective of our first decade making riotous, satirical (and silly) “work”.

The Happiness Index
Are you happy? We can help!

Five Prime Ministers ago, David Cameron started a ‘happiness index’ to measure how joyful the people of this nation are. Which is ironic, given what he then did. Anyway, we’ve picked up the baton and now are trying to find out what the hell we should do with it.

A new personal and political show about our desire, and the country’s struggle, to just be happy.

Ten Thankless Years
The country's absolute best (but not most popular) musical comedians present our greatest hits, from a decade of being wildly under-appreciated.

After a sell-out, five-star run at Edinburgh Fringe 2023, we’ve understandably decided to take this cash-cow on the road.

★★★★★ 'An hour of glorious chaos. A must-see' Sunday Post

★★★★★ 'A proper belly-laugh show' British Theatre Guide

★★★★ 'Wickedly funny' The Times

★★★★ 'Excellent, irresistible and winningly random' The Guardian

★★★★ 'You'll mainly leave feeling warm and fuzzy.... note perfect' Metro

Jodie Nicholson

Tickets: HERE

Based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Jodie Nicholson uses brooding chamber-pop and synth-laden alt-pop to navigate many of the different relationships we have in our lives: friends, family, relationships with ourselves and, more personally, her changing relationship with music.

From infectious, anthemic tracks through to more spacious, melancholic tracks, Nicholson takes the listener on intimate journeys of minimalism and melancholy through to blooming, euphoric ends. Her signature rich harmonies and ethereal, reed-like vocals remain a compelling constant.

Exploring themes of escapism, nostalgia, self-reflection and changes of heart, Nicholson leans on musical influences including Daughter, Matt Corby, The National, Warpaint, Lucy Rose and Laura Marling.

Live, Nicholson has performed at Wilderness, All Points East, Cambridge Folk Festival, Y Not and Live at Leeds, as well as supporting the likes of Emeli Sande, Bernard Butler and Highasakite.

Nicholson's brand new album, 'Safe Hands', is released on 10th May 2024 via Quiet Crown/Absolute ahead of a UK headline tour this June.

“My new obsession... harmonies to die for!” - Sian Eleri (BBC Radio 1)

“Nicholson is shaking off the shackles of genre expectations and coming into her own” – American Songwriter

“The Teesside songwriter is crafting her sound, one impressive release at a time... her goal isn’t so much to sound like her influences, but rather to create like them” - NARC. Magazine

“I love the effortless vocal and the harmonies…  Oh yeah, I don’t know about you, but we’re totally getting The XX vibes” - Jess Iszatt (BBC Introducing)

Group Listening

Tickets: HERE

Musical collaborators for the past decade, Paul Jones and Stephen Black are together known as the woodwind-and-key-wielding, sculptural-papier-mâché-hat-wearing Group Listening.

Following renegade reinterpretation records Clarinet & Piano: Selected Works Vol. 1 (2018) and Vol. 2 (2022), which pulled apart, pondered, and re-shaped cult ambient classics by the likes of Robert Wyatt, Arthur Russell and Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Walks (2024) — a shining modernist monolith buried deep in the woods — is their first volume of completely original compositions.

Walks draws from the field recordings of Ernest Hood; the abstraction of Harold Budd; the saxophone of Sam Gendel; the “heightened naturalism” of a Martin Parr photograph; the clarity and site-specificity of Japanese ambient, environmental & new age music of the 80s and 90s, and, prominently, Robert Walser’s pseudo-biographical novella The Walk — an appreciation of the philosophical space gifted by walks to walkers.

An ode to the gently psychedelic potential of wandering around in some place, any place, every place: the places in one’s own mind, Walks invites you to listen and think; to slip through the fabric of time a little or a lot, depending on how long you’ve got. Over all, to paraphrase Walser, it invites you to glow and flower yourself in the glowing, flowering present.

They will read from and reflect on recent essays published in Tolka. Joining them in conversation, Tolka editor Liam Harrison will discuss the ‘formally promiscuous’ non-fiction the journal publishes, the spaces that literary magazines can open up for writers, and similarities and differences between the Irish and UK literary scenes.

Join Sulaiman Addonia for a discussion around his extraordinary forthcoming novel, The Seers (Prototype Publishing). This urgent, empowering book follows the first weeks of a homeless Eritrean refugee in London, and grapples with how agency is given to the sexual lives of refugees, presenting gender-fluid, trans and androgynous African immigrants, and insisting that the erotic and intimate side of life is as much a part of someone’s story as ‘land and nations’ are.

Witten in one gripping, continuous paragraph, The Seers moves between the present day and the past to explore intergenerational histories, colonial trauma, and the realities of the UK asylum system and its impact on young refugees.

Kelley Stoltz

Kelley Stoltz

Tickets HERE

During the 2010’s Kelley played live as a sideman with Rodriguez and Echo & the Bunnymen, as the 2020’s
dawned he was invited to support Pavement on their big reunion tour. He’s also been heard playing drums live
with Robyn Hitchcock as well as adding sitar to Hitchcock's last two albums. In 2022, Stoltz was championed
with a live appearance on Marc Riley’s BBC6 show. As producer, he has recorded the new album by Brigid
Dawson formerly of the Ohsees.
Between these outside musical projects, pushing past 50 years old and becoming a father for the first time, he
has been steadily writing and recording new songs of his own. The result is “La Fleur”, his 18th album, a dazzling
collection of 12 tracks chosen from the last two years of songwriting. It will be released in May by Agitated in
Europe/UK and Dandy Boy Records in the USA.
“La Fleur” again finds Stoltz plays nearly all the instruments on the album, though a new friendship with pop guru
Jason Falkner has led to Falkners appearance on 2 songs. There’s the requisite 60’s meets 80’s pop rock
confections that Stoltz favors with a new focus on out front vocals and perhaps a bit shinier production.
Pandemic era blues, politics and fatherhood are lyrical touchstones throughout.
“Reni’s Car” is the jangle rock lead single based on an actual event of Kelley riding around Manchester in the
Stone Roses drummers car. “About Time” marries Twin Peaks synths, to Fleetwood Mac and Avalon era Roxy
Music in a cautionary tale to Stoltz's young daughter. “Human Events” puts revolutionary prose to a Moody
Blues strum that floats off into Osees territory ... and do I hear a nod to Gershwin in there?

In my ears, Stoltz rarely does any wrong, and these comparisons are only just that little fruit to get you curious-
he is still one of a kind. An under the radar hero to a few, and still after all these great songs, deserving of more.

Climb on the bandwagon - as ever it’s quite pleasing here.

Brudenell Presents...Squirrel Flower

Tickets HERE

Squirrel Flower is the witch rock project of Chicago (by way of Boston + Iowa) based musician Ella Williams.

Before her new album Tomorrow’s Fire, Squirrel Flower might’ve been labeled something like “indie folk,” but this is a rock record, made to be played loud. As if to signal this shift, the album opens with the soaring “i don’t use a trash can,” a re-imagining of the first ever Squirrel Flower song. Williams returns to her past to demonstrate her growth as an artist and to nod to those early shows, when her voice, looped and minimalistic, had the power to silence a room. Lead singles “Full Time Job” and “When a Plant is Dying,” narrate the universal desperation that comes with living as an artist and pushing up against a world where that’s a challenging thing to be. The frustration in Williams’ lyrics is echoed by the music’s uninhibited, ferocious production. “There must be more to life/ Than being on time,” she sings on the latter’s towering chorus. Lyrics like that one are fated to become anthemic, and Tomorrow’s Fire overflows with them. “Doing my best is a full time job/ But it doesn’t pay the rent” Williams sings on “Full Time Job” over careening feedback, her steady delivery imposing order over a song that is, at its heart, about a loss of control.

Closing track “Finally Rain” speaks to the ambiguity of being a young person staring down climate catastrophe. The last verse is an homage to Williams’ relationship with her loved ones — ‘We won’t grow up.’ A stark realization, but also a manifesto. To be resolutely committed to a life of not ‘growing up,’ not losing our wonder while we’re still here.

Brudenell Presents… CLAMM

Tickets: HERE

Melbourne punk power trio CLAMM released second album Care in August 2022. The album was thrashed by Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music, its first single Bit Much the #1 most added track to US college radio, and has been covered by the likes of Line Of Best Fit, The Chicago Reader, Paste Magazine, DIY Mag, So Young and elsewhere. CLAMM’s music was already concerned with the woes of the world, but the last two years have added extra urgency to their blown out, dystopian punk power. CLAMM explore the confusion of what it is to be a young person trying to live an honourable life in this world. Their songs are about trying to navigate systems of power and oppression while retaining a healthy sense of self and mental health. Community, creativity, and catharsis are what they hope to achieve through their music. Care is bigger, louder and darker than CLAMM’s debut album Beseech Me (2020), which was a feature album across Australian radio and first brought them to international attention. Beseech Me was reissued on vinyl in 2021 by UK label Meat Machine (home to Canadian art-punk provocateurs Crack Cloud), which saw CLAMM featured on the cover of French Rolling Stone and played on BBC 6 Music. In Australia the band has played with Wolf Alice, Amyl & the Sniffers, the Chats and the Murlocs, and have shows booked in 2023 with Ty Segall and Pavement.

DAS RAD

Nick Robinson - guitars, keys / Martin Archer - woodwind, keys / Jon Short - bass guitar / Steve Dinsdale - drums,
keys / Peter Rophone - voices, guitar. SHEFFIELD ENGLAND

Das Rad - where krautrock grooves, extended arrangements, free improvisation and electronic abstraction all meet in the creative centre of the sound. Commentator Sid Smith (Prog Magazine) says: "Is it jazz? Is it rock? Is it folk? Is it prog? Is it electronica? The answer is all of the above and probably a lot more besides. Not that Das Rad care and neither should you. Energetic, incisive and infused with an inquisitive, passionate spirit, Das Rad create music that goes where it needs to. Do what you can to join them on that journey.

Described in a recent review – “a pure heavenly euphoria, to put simply, astounding. Progressive music in the
truest sense of the term, transcending the oft-clichéd sobriquet ‘prog’. They walk in the footsteps of the Rock/jazz/fusion gods of the 70s but make their imprints deeper, more unshapely and longer-lasting. Ears be blown here, folks. Godlike.”

Please Please You & Brudenell Presents…Andrew Wasylyk & Tommy Perman

Tickets HERE

Andrew Wasylyk’s cinematic compositions have been nominated for the Scottish Album of the Year Award and been awarded BBC Radio 6 Music’s Gideon Coe’s Album of the Year. He has collaborated with former National Poet for Scotland, Liz Lochhead, and written soundtracks for Radio 4. Tommy Perman’s work as a musician and DJ has taken him across the world, with numerous record releases under his own name and with experimental group/arts collective FOUND, alongside visual works at the Sydney Opera House and National Museum of Scotland.

The pair have orbited each others worlds for a number of years through audio-visual collaborations spanning record releases, films and sound installations. With their first collaborative album as a duo expected later in the year on Clay Pipe Music, the spirit of the project channels through on new single, ’Communal Imagination’. Wasylyk’s trademark searching piano chords float above Perman’s distinct juddering rhythms, conjuring a Balaeric abstraction of Basil Kirchin. Elsewhere, saxophones and choral vocals climb above fluttering Juno synths in a unifying chorus.

A intimate, transcendental audio visual performance by two artists at the height of their creativity.

Please Please You & Brudenell Presents...Oisin Leech

Please Please You & Brudenell Presents...Oisin Leech

Tickets HERE

Beside Trawbreaga Bay, in Co. Donegal, on the north coast of Ireland, in an old schoolhouse, with a suitcase full of hired recording gear, Oisin Leech strums gently on an acoustic guitar and watches the tide pull the water away from this ancient inlet. The thickness of Oisin’s voice soothes the old world room as the sound waves bounce around in the land where his ancestors still live and still wander.

This is a scene from the makings of Oisin Leech’s first solo album Cold Sea. After a musical history that led Leech from the street punk bands of yesteryear through an ongoing seven-album stint with folk duo The Lost Brothers, he found himself for the first time working on songs to sing alone.

The thought of performing songs with no accompanying harmony and minimal arrangement led Leech to soul-search for new expressions and ways of playing. Throughout the great pause of the pandemic, after his family had gone to bed, Leech sat by the fireplace experimenting with open tunings. The poems of Seamus Heaney and Leech’s own history as a studied playwright inspired the words. In his mind, the songs became imagined vignette films playing behind closed, guitar eyes. After writing nearly 40 new songs in this fashion Leech wrote “October Sun” which would become the foundation for Cold Sea.

“All of a sudden I had a collection of songs that told a complete story. Looking back I see I had created a new world.”

Seeking a producer for the record, Leech made a list of several people he’d like to work with. The first was guitarist and songwriter Steve Gunn, who happily accepted after hearing a demo of 'October Sun'. Leech was sitting on a dream of making the record in Donegal Ireland, a county significant to Leech because it is the place from where his ancestors come from. Pitching this idea to Gunn sparked the first of several serendipities circling the Cold Sea sessions - Gunn had always wanted to visit Donegal to connect with his own familial roots in the region.

Oisin and Steve have just met up and begun their odyssey through the Irish countryside to the coastal school house they intend to convert into a recording studio for a five-day session. On the first night of the journey, they make a stop off in Downings, Ireland where Steve’s grandmother had lived before emigrating to America. They pay a visit to the Olde Glen Bar where Steve’s great-grandparents met. They soon jump in on a traditional pub jam, sharing songs and drinks into the night. Some of Steve’s distant cousins happen to be at the bar that evening. The synchronicity of the journey continues further as someone recommends Oisin and Steve visit a local music historian of sorts named Billy Robinson. Billy has worked with artists like Clannad and John Lee Hooker in the past and happily lends the two total strangers some vintage recording gear, including a ’70s U87 microphone that winds up contributing greatly to the sound of the record.

One of the first things the listener may notice about the Cold Sea album is its tremendous warmth. Each song was recorded effortlessly in just a few takes and adorned gently with synthesizers and guitar from Gunn. Several songs feature contributions on the upright bass by current Bob Dylan band stalwart Tony Garnier. M. Ward plays guitar on “October Sun” and there are strings by stellar Irish fiddler Roisín McGrory and bouzouki by Irish folk legend Dónal Lunny throughout. It is a friendship record but even at its most collaborative, Cold Sea remains centered around the humble acoustic guitar and woollen blanket vocals of Leech.

“Music is a feeling for me. If music makes you feel a certain way, that’s what matters”. Oisin exclaimed to no one, on a pier-side, watching the sun change on the open water.

Leech read Bruce Chatwin’s Songlines while dreaming up the songs on Cold Sea. The book tells of the Aboriginal Outback tradition of songs as maps; they had the belief that the land was ‘sung’ into existence. The album acts in this fashion to express the landscape and atmosphere of where it was made. Intellectually the songs are about many things, including the healing power of the ocean, but in essence they come from deep within their songwriter. “Every time I sing each of these songs a very very clear film starts in my head”, says Oisin. The album's opener “October Sun” plays like a colourful landscape painting rich with sadness just beyond understanding.

The song “Colour of the Rain”, with its odd guitar tuning and carefully scored bass part from Garnier, poetically traces chapters of Leech’s life that unfold in a flash of the northern lights, often visible from Donegal. Leech spent months finding the words to express these feelings.

The song “Trawbreaga Bay” originally had 20 verses before Leech trimmed it down to an easy 3. On the album's instrumental explorations, one can easily smell the air of the northern coast -particularly the song “Maritime Radio” which embodies the region while finding poetry in a radio shipping forecast. With this firm sense of setting, Cold Sea carries a somber and comforting tone that rolls over the listener in healing waves.

Both Oisin and Steve do not hesitate to use the word 'magic' when describing both what happened in Donegal and the music that resulted. There is no other way to put it.

Letters to Leeds- A celebration of Leeds

FREE just show up

We want to hear your thoughts about Leeds!

Letters to Leeds is a project that was born out of a love for Leeds as a place, but also a confusion regarding what makes it great. We want to invite people who share this feeling along on a collective exploration of the city. Whether you’ve been here all along, moved here yesterday, or are just passing through – we want to capture Leeds through your experiences. We will be holding three free workshops at Hyde Park Book Club that focus on capturing these stories from different aspects and angles. The workshops can be attended as individual events, but we encourage people to come to all three since each has a different theme and approach.

Myth-making workshop - 09.03.24, 11-1pm, Hyde Park Book Club
Postcard workshop - 16.03.24, 11-1pm, Hyde Park Book Club
Mapping workshop - 23.03.24, 11-1pm, Hyde Park Book Club

The project will end with a celebration of Leeds and the launch of a collectively created publication on 22nd April at Hyde Park Book Club.

Milkweed + Seb Stone

Since releasing teasing single ‘My Father’s Sheep Is Dead’ last month via established tastemaking compilation Slow Dance ‘23, Milkweed have garnered praise from across the press landscape. From underground champions The Quietus, The Guardian, to folk-specialists Tradfolk and KLOF and indie-cornerstones So Young, Rough Trade, Hard of Hearing and The Most Radicalist - listeners have been beguiled by Milkweed’s confounding sound-collage of cut-up samples, looping guitars, fossilised percussion and captivating vocals. Their sound, dubbed by the duo themselves as ‘Slacker Trad’, has drawn descriptions ranging to experimental hip-hop, hauntology, folk and electronica, in an attempt to place its distinct idiosyncrasies.

The duo’s third work in as many years, Folklore 1979 (2024) takes its lyrics exclusively from an academic journal published by the Folklore Society and renders it into a piece of music that blurs the lines between what is found and what is created. Across a beguiling 11 minutes, Milkweed unspool like a single disjointed dream narrative, taking in ritual, extinction, migration, esoteric cosmogony and Arthurian legend.

\\ Fig by Four

Fig by Four is multi-instrumentalist Sarah Statham (she/her), who weaves ethereal thoughts on connection, memory and loss into a refreshing melting pot of alternative/indie musical storytelling. Hinged on pensive lyrics, dynamic rhythms, characterful guitars and ear-catching basslines, her varied collection of songs swings between the viscerally immediate and the sweepingly cinematic.

With a captivating 5-piece band live show, Fig by Four is taking her imagination through 2024 following the release of her debut record 'Capture Reveal' in October.

\\ Trauma Dump

Trauma Dump are a Queer Indie Pop Band from Leeds creating sad gay bangers with a rubbish tip load of self-deprecating humour. They are influenced largely by the soundscapes of Dream Pop, Shoegaze and Indie Rock and from a wide mix of artists like Wolf Alice, Alvvays , Courtney Barnett and Phoebe Bridgers. Trauma Dump will have you laughing and crying at the same time while you relate to their experience of being Gen Z and Queer. You’ll find audience members at their shows privately sharing their pent up trauma by throwing pieces of paper into the on stage bin.

Please Please You & Hyde Park Folk Club presents Shovel Dance Collective

Tickets HERE

Shovel Dance Collective are a group of nine musicians brought together by a communal passion for the folk music of the British Isles, Ireland and beyond. They nurture and synthesise this material with sensibilities drawn from drone, free improvisation, contemporary classical and metal; weaving this through with a deep sense of the ways in which traditional music holds queer histories, proto-feminist narratives and the voices of those who, by their labour, create the wealth of the world. They are simultaneously traditional and experimental; seeing folk music, not as an archaeological artifact to be unearthed, but as a living communal activity. Inviting and generous to those it speaks to.

They have performed across the UK, including a sold out UK tour and headline concerts at venues such as Cecil Sharp House, Kings Place and Cafe OTO. The collective have appeared at many major festivals: Glastonbury, SXSW, Green Man, End of the Road, Supernormal and Supersonic festivals. Publications such as Loud and Quiet, NME, Financial Times and The Times have heralded their live performances across the years. Their latest critically acclaimed record ‘The Water is the Shovel of the Shore’ has been championed by The Wire, Folk Radio, Tradfolk and was named one of the albums of the year by The Quietus. It is their third public release. They are currently working on their fourth release, as well as many other nebulous projects and ideas across the collective.

Anthony Fantano reviewed the project, stating “the performances aretight, the spoken word passages are edge of your seat, the guitars and saxophones are reallydynamic and fantastic...” He goes on to say, “...this EP, there’s so much potential, there’s so muchgood material... I have no doubt with something of this quality right out the gate, we’re gonna havean even better album down the pipe. Definitely check this EP out because this thing is fire!"
