SGNL is the alias of Michael J Mizra, an audio-visual artist based in Manchester. The music is a mash up of techno, ambient sound design, and body rhythms with a healthy dose of explorative processes involving feedback loops and prepared instruments. Expect the visuals to be sweeping geometric colour swathes or footage from the eternal archive of human activities that is youtube.

Mestisa -

Mestisa formed 16 years ago and perform traditional and popular music from Latin America that has been influenced by the likes of Mercedes Sosa, Lila Downs, Inti Illimani, Los Kjarkas, Chavela Vargas as well as many traditional styles of folk music. The name “Mestisa’ comes from the Spanish word meaning to be of mixed racial and cultural origins - something that describes the band members well, and something that they try to encapsulate in their music. They have recently started writing and performing their own original songs and are due to record these next year.

Darren Phillips -

Darren Phillips is a literary talent wise beyond his years. After becoming involved with Leeds Young Authors (LYA) he has developed into a politically conscious and passionate spoken word performer.

LYA is a grassroots youth organisation founded in 2003 in the socially deprived area of Chapeltown, Leeds, UK. LYA promotes active literacy, social, political and cultural awareness, and offers the opportunity for young people to develop their artistic abilities as confident writers and live performers across race, class, gender, culture and sexual orientation. In July 2016 Darren and LYA hope to represent Leeds and the UK in the Brave New Voices (BNV) International Poetry & Literature Festival, this year held in Washington DC.
