52% of the UK voted, against the predictions of pollsters, to leave the EU. Donald Trump was deemed a joke, and not even supported by his own party, and yet beat the ridiculously more experienced Hilary Clinton. Again, this was against the polls.
Europe and the U.S have in many instances swung to the right. At the same time, there are calls on the left for moderate parties to pitch themselves further left. All around, messages of centrist parties and centre left parties are struggling to cut through in anywhere near the numbers that right wing parties are.
What should those who consider themselves to be of the centre and left take from the electoral victories seen across the western world? Why have the values that drove progressive change throughout the second half of the twentieth century become so difficult to accrue support for?
